4 Different Types of Floral Design

Here are four of my favorite floral designs paired with different wedding venues so you can get a better feel of which style best aligns with your wedding vision:

Romantic

A romantic floral design is a delicate arrangement full of lush flowers and intricate details. This style often has deep red or purple tones throughout, and lace looks incredible when paired with this design.  This style is for you if you are drawn to warm lighting (think candles or chandeliers), rich colors such as maroon or blushes, gold accents, drapery, sparkly details, etc. Other words I would use to describe this particular style are “dreamy,” “elegant,” “ethereal,” or “enchanting.”

There are two venues I love that would be a match made in heaven for this style. One is The Paramour Estate, and the other is the Greystone Mansion Gardens. Both of these locations are grand and elegant and have intimate lighting that would go beautifully with a romantic floral design arrangement.

Garden-style

A garden-style floral arrangement can fit many different moods, whether you want your wedding to have a rustic/country atmosphere, an organic and natural atmosphere, or a whimsical atmosphere. This is a beautiful, loose floral arrangement that has the appearance of freshly gathered flowers from a garden put on display.

This floral style is a great choice for you if you’re drawn toward bright colors, flower crowns, a natural feel, and garden-inspired elements. To get a better feel of a venue a garden-style arrangement would compliment check-out Rancho Las Lomas.  This venue has ancient oak and sycamore trees, an open-air ceremony space, and botanical gardens making it a dreamy atmosphere to fill with garden-style floral arrangements.

Wildflower

A wildflower floral arrangement is quite similar to a garden-style arrangement. Your florals will not be arranged in a rigid, uniform structure. Instead, you’ll see flowers overflowing, wild, and free-flowing. A wildflower style will fit right in with your wedding if you are drawn to lace details, flower crowns, string lights, bright colors, rustic elements, greenery, and fun and mismatched details.

Wildflowers beautifully complement a space as they are delicate and expressive and come in a variety of hues and colors.

There are so many unique and creative wildflower floral arrangements you could choose from, such as an all-natural white wildflower arrangement, a gorgeous cascading wildflower arrangement, a lavender wildflower arrangement, etc. For this style, think “unconventional,” “whimsical,” and “light-hearted” or “nature-inspired.”

A wildflower floral arrangement is perfect for a venue like The Swanner House. This restored farmhouse is surrounded by citrus groves and includes manicured gardens, rolling hills, twinkling lights, and an ancient oak tree.

Structural

A structural floral arrangement is compact and gives off a timeless and classic feel. This style is clean, simple, and perfect for you if you describe your wedding vision as “modern” and “minimal.”

These florals can be monochromatic or single-flower arrangements. If you’re drawn to geometric shapes and designs, bright whites with contrasting colors, architectural design pieces, and minimal but elegant decor, this is your style.

To get a better feel of a venue a structural floral arrangement would blend well with check out Parker Palm Springs. Parker Palm Springs is chic, stylish, and has a minimalist and elegant feel.

How to Choose Your Floral Design Style

Your wedding florals are more than just your wedding bouquet, boutonnieres, and corsages. The floral design style you choose can evoke different emotions and set a different tone and mood depending on which one you choose.

To figure out which style best suits your wedding here’s where to start:

Describe your wedding vision

Begin by grabbing a notepad and pen and write down any adjectives you would use to describe your wedding. Some adjectives you might use are:

  • Boho

  • Classical

  • Whimsical

  • Elegant

  • Nature-inspired

  • Modern minimalist

  • Rustic/country

  • Vintage

Also, I would encourage you to hop on Pinterest and start putting together a vision board that you love, matches your aesthetic, and for inspiration. When it comes to florals, you probably aren’t looking at them every single day and may not even know some of the options out there.

Finding inspiration on Pinterest or social media can help to give you a bigger picture of what you can actually do and all of the unique and truly personal elements you can add to your florals.

Think about your color scheme and venue

Another important part of choosing your floral design style is making sure that it pairs well with your color scheme and venue. If you want to create a cohesive look for your day, you’ll want to ensure that your florals blend well with your color palette.

Also, think about the size and style of your venue and which arrangements would look best. For example, if you were getting married at an estate a romantic floral style would go well with this venue versus choosing a wildflower arrangement.

You also want to make sure that the florals themselves don’t clash with the vibe of the venue itself. If your venue is filled with tons of details and color, you may want to have a slightly more simple floral approach. On the other hand, if your venue is very minimalistic, you may be able to add more florals throughout to create the aesthetic you want.

Hire a florist

Your florist can help you make your final decision on which floral design style best complements your wedding. The great thing about hiring a florist is that you don’t need to know everything.

Instead, you can let us know your overall vision for the wedding, color palette, where you are getting married, and any ideas you have for the types of arrangements you know you want (like bouquets, table arrangements, floral arches, etc).

Then, we can help take the reins, give you suggestions on different flower varieties and what’s in season, and help you come up with any additional arrangements that can help tie everything together!
