What Are Statement Flowers and Should They Be a Part of Your Wedding?
As a florist based in Southern California, I want to let you in on a little floral industry secret - even if you won’t be having a loud, colorful wedding, using a more specific color in one statement piece can capture attention and still be elegant. Also, if you are playing with fewer colors, using a color-blocked statement piece can be very striking when using lots of variety.
Bold statement flowers are a popular rising trend in the wedding industry! One reason I love them is that they offer you endless opportunities for customization and personalization. They will also add a fun pop of color to your celebration, but still make your wedding feel luxurious and elevated!
Read on to learn more about statement flowers and whether they are the perfect touch of elegance and creativity to infuse into your wedding theme and design.
What Are Wedding Statement Flowers?
Wedding statement flowers embrace bold colors and larger sizes. They set an entirely different tone and mood for your space and make a stronger visual impression than traditional wedding flowers. Some common choices for statement flowers include peonies, dahlias, hydrangeas, white calla lilies, ranunculuses, orchids, and other large, showy blooms. For reference, take a look at a statement floral arrangement I designed here!
One of the main differences between statement flowers and traditional flowers is that statement flowers allow you to incorporate your individual style into the overall design, and the arrangements will feel truly unique to you.
There are so many different ways to use statement flowers, whether you want to create an eye-catching backdrop, bold boutonnieres and bouquets, centerpieces, etc.
Should You Use Statement Flowers at Your Wedding?
The answer - it depends! If you know that you want classical floral arrangements that seamlessly blend with your color palette, statement floral arrangements aren’t likely going to be the direction you want to take.
But… if you want floral arrangements that feel fresh and modern, add a splash of color, and enchant your guests from the moment they see them, statement flowers could be the perfect choice.
Remember, statement flowers are not meant to feel random or look totally out of place. They still have an intentional design behind them. Furthermore, they are meant to fit within the space where you place them, not create chaos or distraction.
Questions You Need to Ask Your Florist
Whether you want to choose statement flowers and arrangements for your wedding or something more traditional, there are some questions that you need to ask your florist first to make sure that they are the perfect match for you and can create florals that align with your wedding vision:
Questions you should ask your florist about statement floral arrangements:
How will you make sure that the statement floral arrangements you design fit within and complement our wedding venue?
Based on what you know about our wedding venue, which statement floral arrangements would you suggest? A floral arch? A dramatic floral backdrop? Altar arrangements? Full centerpieces?
Based on our color palette, which statement flowers would you recommend? How can we infuse our unique style into these floral arrangements?
General questions to ask the florist you’re considering:
Are you available for my wedding date?
How many other weddings or events will you schedule on the same day?
How far in advance do I need to secure your services?
What is your refund policy if, for some reason, I need to cancel my order?
Are you available to do a venue walk-through before the wedding date? Do you charge a fee for this?
What recommendations can you give me to maximize my budget?
Do you have a portfolio of weddings I can look at?
Which flowers would you recommend based on the time of year/season, color palette, and budget?
How far in advance of the wedding will you create the bouquets and arrangements, and how are they stored?
Can you assist me in preserving my bouquet after the wedding? If not, can you refer me to someone who can?
What else to know before hiring your wedding florist
The best advice I can give you before deciding to move forward and sign a contract with a florist is to really take the time to look through their portfolio. With that being said, don’t just review their website portfolio; be sure to also take a look at their social media to see if their design style aligns with what you’re looking for.
Also, be sure to read their reviews from previous clients and see what their experience was like! Seeing phrases such as “they were super easy to work with,” or “they went above and beyond,” or “they exceeded my expectations” are all phrases that should reassure you that the florist you’re considering is the one for you!
Furthermore, before hopping on a call with a florist, you should take a look at your venue’s policies regarding what your florist can and can’t do. Usually, florists are required per venue policy to send a copy of their insurance in advance, and your venue may also require your florist to do a walkthrough of the venue before the wedding.
Something else important to note - some wedding venues only permit you to work with their recommended florist, or they may even require approval for your florist to be able to work at their venue. These are all very important details that you’ll want to know before hopping on a call with your florist to make sure everything is in order.
