If you want to understand what a floral arrangement is and how you can design one that is unique and noticeable, you’ve come to the right place for answers!
As a Southern California florist who specializes in elevated whimsical floral arrangements, I wanted to create a guide with tips on how to elevate your floral arrangements and create stunning pieces that capture the eye.
Read on to answer all of your questions about what a floral arrangement is and how to create a floral arrangement that stands out!
What Is a Floral Arrangement?
A floral arrangement is the art of choosing and organizing flowers and foliage to create a harmonious appearance, texture, and color combination. But it’s also so much more than just colors and texture - floral arrangements are about creative expression and artistry.
The possibilities are truly endless when it comes to different types of floral arrangements you could make! Also, no two floral arrangements have to look the exact same—each can have its own unique flair/ personality.
Some types of flower arrangements you could choose from include centerpieces, a bar arrangement, a long and low arrangement, a crescent arrangement, and bouquets. It all really depends on the type of event you’re hosting (a wedding, gala, anniversary, etc) and what arrangements make the most sense for your event.
Along with there being many different types of flower arrangements, there’s also a variety of styles that you can choose from, such as whimsical style, monochromatic, neutral, romantic, loose and wild, etc.
A floral arrangement can completely transform any event, and they are absolutely worth investing in! For instance, they can elevate the ambiance you’re trying to create, whether that’s timeless and classical, whimsical and boho, or something else. Floral arrangements can also set the tone and mood for your event.
The truth is, ambiance and mood aren’t just created through your lighting, table settings, and venue - they’re also created through your floral arrangements.
How to Make Your Floral Arrangement Noticeable
Floral arrangements are meant to be just pretty decor that blends into the background of your event or celebration. So, how can you make your floral arrangements noticeable? Here are my top 5 tips to try:
Use texture
You can use texture to capture attention, but you should also be consistent with colors to ease the eye. You don’t want your arrangement to be “too much”; rather, the texture should be alluring and create balance and harmony. For example, take a look at the floral arrangement I created here, which includes allium, lilac, Japanese sweet pea, and jasmine vine.
You can create texture in your floral arrangement by layering your foliage. This adds different depths and dimensions to your arrangement. You can also mix and match different textures, such as using a soft and hard texture or a smooth and rough texture.
Lastly, one of my favorite ways to add texture (and it’s so simple) is to use unique textured containers as the base of your arrangement.
Use movement
When creating your floral arrangement, the style of the blooms you use can emphasize soft and gentle movement. Check out an example of this here! In this example, I used soft isianthks but texture in the yarrow and fennel flower to convey movement. Other ways you can create movement in your floral arrangements are with florals that move your eye, such as using hanging amarathus, tulips, or calla lilies, which can all create a “drippy” effect.
Use classic blooms in stylistic ways
Another way I love to make floral arrangements pop is by using classic blooms in a stylistic way that creates an elevated modern design. Take a look at an example of this here.
Use many different types of blooms and textures
Don’t be afraid to be playful and have fun with your floral arrangement! You can try mixing many different types of blooms and textures to create an arrangement that is more abundant and has a distinct wildflower look. Check out an example of this here.
This floral arrangement style is perfect for you if you want your arrangement to stand out and do not want florals that will be arranged in a rigid, uniform structure. Instead, you’ll see flowers overflowing, wild, and free-flowing. Different blooms and textures can beautifully complement your event space by capturing attention with a variety of hues and colors.
Use drip and height
You can create a “drip” effect with your arrangement or use height to create a modern, enchanting floral arrangement! Check out what this looks like here! If you want to add height to your arrangement, you can establish a focal point by using your tallest blooms and branches and arranging your other floral elements around the focal point. You can also position your taller flowers at the back or center of your arrangement and gradually decrease the height of your arrangement towards the front or sides.
On the other hand, if you want to create a drip effect, you could try adding in vines that spill out of the floral arrangements or by using chicken wire so you can create a “spill” effect for your design. Amaranthus is also the perfect touch to create “drip” in your arrangement.
