Tips for Creating a Unique Floral Design for Your Wedding (That Doesn’t Look Like Anyone Else’s)

One of the most common questions I get from my clients is “How can my floral design be unique and fresh?” And my answer is always that there are so many different ways to achieve this, usually to their disbelief, because I get it, sometimes it feels like it’s all been done before.

However, the truth is - your wedding florals don’t have to look like anything you (or your wedding guests) have seen previously. There are an abundance of ways to make your floral design stand out and be uniquely yours.

As a Southern California florist, my goal with my clients is to always curate your ideas into a unique floralscape that is thoughtfully tended to and create floral designs that feel original and distinctive.

Read on to discover my tips on creating a unique floral design!

Tips for Creating a Unique Floral Design (That Doesn’t Look Like Anyone Else’s)

If you want to create a truly unique floral design, here’s my advice on how to do it:

It’s totally okay to go with trends

When you hear the word trend, you might be asking yourself, “How is that supposed to be unique?” The first thing I’ll say is that you don’t have to go out of your way to reinvent the wheel when it comes to floral design.  Rather than just copying and reusing a popular trend, you can think about what you are drawn to within the trend and incorporate those elements into your own floral design to make your design feel fresh and original.

Add in your own personal likes and interests

If you want your floral design to feel more than just unique but also meaningful to you, try adding textures, colors, and styles that you adore! You can also have your florist create an arrangement that reminds you of your favorite movie, song, hobby, etc.

I’ve added whimsical elements such as fabrics, stones, glassware, and other significant items that previous clients have brought to me to include. For instance, you could add photographs, a spoon from your grandmother’s house, jewelry, a family heirloom, etc to your floral arrangement - the possibilities are endless!

Here are some other elements I’ve incorporated into previous clients‘ floral designs to inspire you as you start crafting your own floral vision:

  • Adding tropical elements in a vineyard setting, which was not only unique but also authentically reflected the couple’s life, check it out here

  • Trying out a mix of softer textures versus always going for a more structured texture. Discover more here

  • Adding fruit to a bouquet - so much fun and such an enchanting touch! See what this looks like here

  • Creating a gorgeous statement floral area - I love how this one turned out! Check it out here

  • Incorporating scent into the floral design. For this client, I added a perfume to their design. Check out the arrangement here

Find a florist whom you deeply trust

When it comes to creating a unique floral design that you’ll not only love but also cherish, it’s important to find a florist that you trust and who understands your design goals. When consulting with your florist, you can always ask them if there are any designs they’ve been hoping to do for inspiration, too!

Finding a florist to work with goes beyond just looking at some of their previous designs and making a decision because you like the aesthetics of their designs. While of course it’s important to love their prior work, make sure that you also get a better understanding of what other clients’ experiences were like working with them.

The first step to finding the perfect florist is understanding what you need. How will flowers enhance your wedding? Do you want them to be delicate accents or bold and colourful statements?

You can also write down what floral arrangements you’d like to have, such as a floral arch, a floral wall, large centrepieces, etc. Remember, just because a florist is local to your area or recommended by your wedding venue, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are the right fit for you.

Another tip for finding your dream florist who can create a wholly unique floral design for you? Seek out creativity! Is the florist you’re considering innovative? Do their designs feel outside the box and fresh?

These are all important questions to ask to find a florist who is going to help bring your wedding vision to life!

Start on the details further out than you think you need to

The last thing you want when creating a stunning floral design is for it to feel rushed—trust me. The sooner you start coming up with the details, the more time you have to add meaning to your design and make sure that it matches perfectly with your wedding vision.

A general rule of thumb is to start designing your wedding flowers at least six months before your wedding - but the sooner the better! Also, when it comes to hiring a florist, this should be one of the first vendors that you hire.
