Wedding Floral Design Tips: How Light Affects Your Wedding Flowers

When you are thinking about your flowers for your wedding, you may just be thinking that you have to pick a couple of arrangements that match your wedding colors and call it day. But, there are so many different things to think about when it comes to choosing your wedding florals.

As a Southern California florist, I have worked with many incredible couples to bring their wedding visions to life. I have a few wedding floral design tips regarding lighting to help you create something truly unique and beautiful.

So, let’s dive into what you need to know about lighting when it comes to your floral design and how that can affect your floral arrangements!

Lighting Plays a Big Role in How Your Flowers Look

One thing that is often overlooked when it comes to wedding flowers is how they will look in all of the different lighting throughout your wedding day. You don’t just want to have flowers that match your wedding colors; you want to think about what the flowers are actually going to look like inside your space.

To do this, there are a few things that you want to do before settling on your flowers. First, you need to ensure that you have your wedding vibe and aesthetic nailed down. This is going to play a big role in how you want your overall wedding to look like.

Do you want something a bit darker and moodier? Do you want something lighter and airier? Will your wedding venue have more natural light, or will it have more artificial light?

All of these things are going to affect the color and tone of your flowers! You can also think about where the different parts of your wedding will take place. Is it all going to be inside? Is it all outside? Is there a mix of where you are going to be?

This is so important because the lighting in the different areas of your wedding venue can affect what your wedding flowers actually look like. This may mean looking for something that works in different types of lights or having different arrangements of flowers throughout different parts of your wedding.

Take these two examples. In this one, the space has a more romantic and exotic feel, and in this one, it has more gentle indoor light. Both of these arrangements have pink flowers in them, but the look and feel of the flowers are very different.

Don’t Be Afraid to Use Different Floral Types

As you are building out your floral design, you may find that the different parts of your wedding have slightly different styles, space, and more. When it comes to this, don’t be afraid to use different floral types throughout the various areas and parts of your wedding.

Every piece doesn’t have to look exactly the same for your arrangements to feel cohesive. In fact, building different arrangements to fit the various spaces and lighting can help create an even more unique and fun vibe for your wedding.

The goal of your flowers is to accentuate the space and aesthetic of your wedding without feeling overwhelming. So, think about the space and lighting that you are going to have and build your arrangements around that.

How Can a Wedding Florist Help You Build Your Floral Design?

Working with a florist can really take your flower arrangements to the next level when it comes to lighting and picking the right flowers. While you have seen many different flowers and arrangements throughout your life, we work with them day in and day out in all different types of settings.

We can help you understand how different lighting will bring out various tones throughout your flowers and whether it is the right fit for the mood and aesthetic you are actually going for!

This also means we can help you pick which arrangements will work best in which space to ensure that everything feels cohesive for your big day. For some people, this may mean having arrangements that work anywhere throughout the venue, and you can repurpose or move them around throughout the day.

For others, this may mean making specific arrangements for specific parts of your wedding day to ensure that your vision is truly realized.

Take a wedding that is having an outdoor ceremony but an indoor reception. For the ceremony, something like a larger arrangement that has lots of greens with some pops of colors may work great. The natural light outside will play off the green beautifully and make everything look vibrant!

But indoors, those same greens may look a bit moodier with the artificial lighting of the reception. So, instead of having the same or similar arrangements indoors, we may lean more toward smaller arrangements that just use pops of color.

This way we can keep that vibrant tone throughout the entire day, but we are using the arrangements in different ways to bring that aesthetic to life!
